Fishing is the mainstay of the people of Igbimidaka community in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, but today, their only source of income is being hampered due to blockage of the river from where they ply their God-given trade.
Besides the blocked river, which the people were begging the Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC) to dredge, the only borehole through which they access good water for domestic use had been allegedly demobilised by government officials who came to remove the faulty solar panel powering the borehole for repair and were yet to return it.
On a visit to the area by the commissioner representing Okpe, Sapele and Ethiope West local government areas of Delta State in the board of DESOPADEC, Dr Henry Ofa, the chairman of the community enjoined the commissioner to see to their plight as regards their two nagging challenges in order to return food and potable water to the table of the people.
The chairman who was represented by Mr Income Okionokio said,“the river flowing to Sapele where we fish is blocked; it was once cleared by DESOPADEC. The river is the only source of fishing to get money to feed. We have no potable water again after the solar panel powering the only borehole in the community was removed by some government officials for repair. Since then, we have no water to drink; we want you to help us.”Meanwhile, Dr Ofa, while responding to the requests, enjoined the people to channel their case in writing for onward intervention by the board.
